You've seen the Before picture above (at least, you've seen the 70's sink and the horrible terra cotta paint.)
If you've been reading my blog for a while, you know that I love everything beachy. So... it makes sense that I would give a little beachy feel to our basement bathroom makeover.
And that means lots of white. And I love bead board! We decided to do it a little different, and run our beadboard horizontally instead of vertically.
We used the pre-finished beadboard, because we thought it would save us time prepping and painting ('cause you know how much time is spent caulking when you put up beadboard or board and batten!)
The board cut pretty well, you just have to remove all the dust really well that forms from cutting. To hang it, we used wood glue and Hubs' power nail gun (I love that thing!) The nails look better if they are in the indention - be sure to get them good and in there so that the holes can be filled with spackle or wood filler before painting.
We installed 1x6" boards as the baseboard, and 1x4" boards at the top of the beadboard.
If we were smart, we would have measured so that the beadboard either ended just below or just above the light switches, instead of right in the middle.
That meant that we had to cut a notch out of the beadboard AND in the 1x4" that was at the top of the beadboard. (We put the light switch cover on and measured where to cut the 1x4" - so that we'll be able to take the cover on and off if we need to.
Funny how dingy the light switches look since they are almond colored and the boards are white.
And changing out light switches is NOT a job I'll tackle... . They'll just have to get a good cleaning and stay put!
In the tight spaces, like where the 1x4" meets the door trim, I used wood spackle to fill the gap. It goes on purple, and dries white. Pretty nifty, because you can tell where the excess is and when it is ready to be sanded and/or painted. I just use my finger to wipe off the excess. (It's already dry in this picture.)
Here's the 1x4" on top and the corner piece in place to hide the seam. This is before the dreaded caulking! (I'm a good caulker, and I really don't mind doing it, but it had been a long 3 days with lots of caulking already!) You will want to caulk where the vertical boards meet the top horizontal boards, as well as the sides of the horizontal pieces.
And here it is caulked and with a coat of white semi-gloss. It's hard to tell, but we used Valspar's Ancient Olive paint above the beadboard. It's just a slight green color - check out Heather's antique washstand she painted with this color.)
(Notice the awesomely awesome avocado green tiles that surround the shower. Changing the tiles or having them re-done is out of our budget.)
What do you think so far?

I love all things beachy too and I think the bead board sideways is pretty interesting - Dare to Be Different! We did what I called a halfway makeover of our guest bathroom due to cost of retiling the tub area. It still was a huge improvement!
Looking good! I have never seen beadboard horizontal before {I dont get out much I guess} it looks awesome like that,
