Although I haven't done a house tour on my blog yet, trust me when I say that my house is all shades of brown, brown, and brown. I'm trying to frugally replace and add in accessories that are lighter and different colors. Recently, I completed two projects that have lightened up our family room area.
My mom gave me a coffee table (with permission to paint it! haha!) a few weeks ago. I am so glad to say that I've painted it and I love it.
I couldn't decide what color to paint it, so I gave it a good coat of white primer then painted one coat of the paint we used in our foyer project, Valspar Sea Salt Blue.
It actually looks white since I only used one coat of the Sea Salt Blue, and I guess most people who see it will think it's painted white. I'm okay with that. I don't think I'm going to go back and paint another coat of blue.
{Next item to find/create... a rug!}
I'm terrible at decorating coffee tables.
:)
Here are two options.
I think my favorite is the one on the right... I do loooove my cute little owl that I told my mom to get me my mom got me for Christmas.

Another frugal project I did this past weekend was making new curtains for our family room area out of a dropcloth!
I guess technically - **roll eyes** - drop cloths are a neutral / light brown color. I think they're the color of sand, and I'm all about the beach. So yeah, they're staying. :)
Isn't that horrible??! I'm embarrassed that they've been there for six looong years! UGH!
Sorry for the terrible picture! The lighting was about as great as the curtains!
Without curtains, it looks so much better! I wish we could go without any, but I get a little creeped out thinking that someone could be in the yard at night looking in. Too many scary movies when I was a teenager, I guess.
About the curtains...
I scored a dropcloth at Lowe's for a little under $11.
I folded the dropcloth longways and ironed a crease in the middle then used the crease as my guide for cutting. Once I cut it into two panels, I ironed and ironed to get the wrinkles out. (I found that when I used the steam setting, it worked like a charm.)
I folded in the cut side about 3/4 of an inch to make a "hem" for the outside of the panels.
I also measured down 16 inches from the top, drew a line, and cut.
I LOVE the way they turned out!
I still have to get the length just right, but I'm glad to get them up. I need to hit up Connie to find out her secret to getting the length just right!
Check out her curtains:
Aren't they great? I love her orange pillow, too.
So... my to do list now:
1. paint coffee table
2. put up new curtains
3. find a great rug for the sofa/coffee table area
4. decide how to "finish off" the curtains (trim, ribbon, paint, anything?)
5. Fix the length on the curtains
6. paint the walls on the main level (family room, dining, kitchen - it's all one big open area)
7. decide on the staircase walls - board and batten? beadboard? just paint?
