My New Front Door!

On Halloween, we had our new front door installed.

I'm embarrassed to show you what our old ones looked like...

I promise it looks worse in pictures! (And bright light)... ((shudder))
It had even gotten the point that light was coming through some of those cracks.

Here's the outside view (taken the day before Halloween.)

(Like my thrifty Halloween decorations? I spray painted the urns black, added some branches from the yard along with Dollar Tree spider webs and black crows.)

(Hubs did a patch job to last us until we could get our new door. See the filled cracks in the bottom row of panels? Yikes!)

When we moved in the house, the outside was painted gray. The walls were gray, the trim was gray, the doors were gray. (Sad house, huh?!) When we changed the exterior wall paint to brown and the trim was changed to a cream color, we painted the doors dark brown. Then about two years ago, Hubs stripped the doors and stained them. They were beautiful for a while... but the sun and weather had just beat them down. It was just time for them to go!

Here is our awesome new door...
We still have to caulk and paint (on the list for today!) Notice the boards that had to be used on the sides to fill the gaps. It really brightens things up in the foyer. As I walk by, I find myself checking to see if the door is open because there's so much more light in there!

Notice it's only ONE door, too. Hubs and I debated... he wanted two and I thought I only wanted one door. We decided on one door because I love the way a house looks with a wreath on the door! I could never get the decorations how I liked them with two doors.

Here's where I need your help. See those wooden trim pieces between the door and the sidelights? We're trying to decide between painting them black to match the door or cream to match the trim. What do you think? I've been looking at everyone's doors in our neighborhood and the neighborhoods I drive through on the way to work. There's both out there, and they look good!

I looked around the Internet for ideas, and I saw these
Notice the doors, sidelights, and trim are same color.

Again with the wood all the same color.

Over at Between Naps on the Porch, you'll see a different sight:
The door color really pops, huh?

And over at In My Own Style, she does a little of both. The door and sidelights are black, and the wood trim between the two are painted the color of the house trim.

What do you think?

Thanks for stopping by,

Hi, Love the new door and sidelights! Brought back memories of my front entrance makeover in the house we used to have. And our 'before' was pretty bad too. Wish I had pictures! Oh well....thanks for visiting my blog post on the burlap...unfortunately I did not photograph the tutorial! It was really easy though. I cut the burlap down the center and used the selvage for the bottom so I didn't even have to sew a hem! Then attached it to a full size flat sheet. The pleats are fairly simple. If I do another one I'll def photo it! Thanks for stopping by! I'm going to follow your blog! ~ Judy ~

Sidelights were definitely the best way to go! Not only do they look better than having two doors, they also let in much more natural light, which reduces the need for electric light, at least until later in the day.

Thank you for sharing these great ideas! But I think your door is way better than those samples you posted above. The color black suited the design of the door. I think that's the great thing about black, you can pair with other designs and colors but it will still stand out!
